Artificialism as a specific Czech inter-war style

Bočková, A.: Artificialism as a specific Czech inter-war style [Diploma thesis] Prague, 2016 - Charles University, Faculty of Education, Department of Art Education. 118 p. This diploma thesis has the character of comparative analysis, which deals with the Artificialism as specific Czech style in the period between two world wars. This work maps its position in the interwar art. It finds resource for a development of art and literary style similar to poetism or the Devetsil association. The poetism brings a new view of the world. The Artificialism is its visual equivalent that provides identification of the painter and poet, or poetry and image, or the topic of memories of memories. The thesis also presents the main and only two members of Artificialism - Styrsky and Toyen, and discusses their work, ideas, practices and theoretical works. I analyse the tensioned relationship between Artificialism and surrealism in the conclusion. The important finding is that artificialism is the original and most peculiar style of the interwar avant-garde, not only an intermediate step between Cubism and Surrealism, as it was presented in last years. The main goal of this thesis titled Separated libraries - Library of Karel Teige is based on Teige's important life events to pursue his creative activity and to connect it with his personal library. This topic will form the first part of the thesis - split into period of Devetsil and Surrealist group. In the second part, I deal with the issue of Teige's separated library and its further destiny after 1951. I focus primarily on Teige's estate in the Museum of Czech Literature and on its composition. An important item of this second part are letters between the Ministry of National Security - Headquarters of State Security and the National Security Secretary, which describe an event between the intervention of the State Security into the apartment of Karel Teige and depositing Teige's estate to the National Museum Library. This thesis should help to clarify how Teige's library was separated and where it was deposited.

On the basis of individual manifests and programmatic articles it was defined as modus vivendi. In the 1920's many principles and ideas were shaping the future, not only for the society, but also for the artistic movements. Poetism featured mainly an original concept of art and life; the authors of theoretical articles were mainly Karel Teige and Vítězslav Nezval. Within a few years the concept of life as a careless game and a source of joy faded and bitter- sweet topics began to penetrate Poetism. At this time, the poetics of Poetism changed from the original cheerfulness and everyday beauty to serious existential topics - the evidence is provided by many works of art. Czech avant-garde argumentation, in ReD magazine's replies to outer eriticism

The theme of the work is assessment of argumentation strategies used by Revue Devetsil (ReD) editors, eg in response to articles published elsewhere or other critical contributions - especially in the context of conflict of art and politics. In particular, the observed situations relate to cases in which ReD editors expressed their views on the evaluations of contemporary avant-garde movement. The content of the study is an analysis of argumentation techniques according to social viewpoint. Rather than formal stylistic means, the text is oriented to contents and context of the use of specific or repeated arguments, especially the position from which the message is being produced. At the same time, the work captures the communication traits and characteristics of the First Republic cultural journalism and the position of the Czech avant-garde at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s. The thesis is divided into four chapters and a conclusion. The first one presents the media landscape of the First Republic cultural journalism, the second chapter informs about Devetsil movement, third part focuses on presentation of the goals of the Revue Devetsil, the fourth chapter presents examples of argumentative concepts on the genre of the manifesto, the polemics and the theoretical study. The Motifs in Selected Poetistic Works by Karel Schulz, Vladislav Vančura and Karel Konrád

The aim of this thesis is to compare motifs in three Poetistic works. The selected works were Dáma u vodotrysku by Karel Schulz, Rinaldino by Karel Konrád, and Dlouhý, Široký, Bystrozraký by Vladislav Vančura. Besides comparation of selected works, the thesis also describes typical characteristics of each work, and the personal style and attitude of each author in relation to programme concepts of the Poetistic art written by Karel Teige and other members of U. S. Devětsil. The work concludes to typical characteristics of Poetistics art and explains why we can classify selected works as Poetistic although there are many differences between them.
The Hidden Avant-Garde. Czech Avant-Garde Fiction between Individualism and Collectivism

in English This work focuses on the Czech afterwar avant-garde and its fiction in the wider European context. The main goal of our writing was diversifying literary historical field by integrating genre of short story and its authors into the interpretive frame of the prepoetistic avant-garde. We could intrude a canonic picture of the Czech avant-garde by enriching the interpretive frame of the new genre (short story) and new, often hardly known or forgotten, writers. Last but not least by doing so we were able to questioned and problematized basic oppositions such as expressionism × avant-garde, and mainly individualism × collectivism. We introduce the principal opposition individualism × collectivism, which in our opinion, organizes afterwar literary discourse, as a main connecting line between Czech avant-garde art and European art (collective and one of its manifestation - crowd, as one of the main themes of modernism and avant-garde). We interpretate beyond this scope the fictions of French unanimism as the main inspiration of the Czech afterwar avan-garde and its (collective) fiction as well.
The revolutionary dream Devětsil(1918-1921)

The revolutionary dream Devětsil is about young artists and leftist intellectuals who set up the avant-gardist union of artists known as the Devětsil in october 1920. The establishment of the Devětsil was the culmination their experience and participation in events of the revolutionary era (1918 - 1920) when the realization of social revolution made great changes possible in Czechoslovakia. The idea for the Devětsil came about spring 1919 during the first bigger revolutionary wave. As the part of the avant-garde scene, members of the Devětsil wanted to create more than an artistic union, they wanted to have political and action program. However their conceptions of the revolution were very abstract in spite of their marxist convictions. Althoug one of their main goals was the abstract realization and the expression of a revolutionary actuality, they were not actually in touch with the revolution because there was a big intellectual distinction betwen members of the Devětsil and proletariansm who according to Marx were main protagonicts of the revolutionary process.
